16. Knowing that the Dursleys were terribly neglectful of Harry, Ron wrote to Mrs. Weasley and asked her to do something special for Harry for Christmas. Ron then acted surprised when he saw that Harry got a Weasley sweater, that way Harry would believe that there were people who cared, even if they had never met him. Mrs. Weasley never told Ron, but she had already made Harry a sweater as soon as she’d received Ron’s first letter from school saying that he and Harry were friends.

He’s never had this sort of attention before. He doesn’t know what it’s like to be the hero, to be the big quidditch star. He’s spent so much of his life in the background, behind his successful brothers, behind Harry, behind everyone who he has deemed better than himself but here, in this moment, he’s not behind anyone and he’s just Ron. And people still love him for it. Just look at that expression. That is a boy who can’t believe how lucky he is right now, a boy who so often thinks poorly of himself, a boy who has always been loved, but was never able to see it. And in this moment he looks genuinely satisfied with himself, and that’s not something you normally get to see from Ronald Weasley.
